Shasta Achieves Premiere Green School Status

Shasta Middle School has become a Premiere Oregon Green School. Shasta moves up from its Merit level status to the highest rating achievable in the Oregon Green School program.

Led by Shasta Educational Assistant Karlie Slagle, the school’s Green Team student club went through great lengths to earn the Premiere Green School status.

They monitored the lunchtime composting in the school cafeteria, recycled the school’s bottles and cans, conducted energy and recycling audits, and sorted through school garbage to determine what was being thrown away that could be recycled or composted.

A Bethel Education Foundation grant allowed the Green Team to purchase rainwater barrels for the school garden, and school-wide announcements.

Along with the Premiere level recognition, the school has received a $500 incentive grant to help continue the Green School-related efforts at Shasta.
