New food pantry launches in Shasta Middle School parking lot

01/21/2022

It was an exciting day Thursday as Food for Lane County opened a new mobile pop-up food pantry in the Shasta Middle School Parking lot.

The pantry is open to all Bethel community members from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. every Thursday in the back Shasta parking lot near the baseball fields. Items that will be available for pickup include fresh produce, eggs and non-perishable items.

Address: 4656 Barger Dr, Eugene, OR 97402

Damien Mojarro, Food for Lane County’s mobile food pantry coordinator, said Thursday that the pantry aims to reach more families in the Bethel area.

“We believe that schools are one of the institutions that are most connected to their community, Mojarro said. “This is a way for us to better connect with area residents who know and trust their school community.”

Mobile food pantries in Lane County typically serve 60-70 people and pass out 3,500-4,000 pounds of food.

Mojarro said local pantries like the one that opened on Thursday help to reduce the stigma of free food offerings, and promote food pantries in general.

“Being able to help families with the food means that they have money in their pockets for other needs,” Mojarro said. “We’re grateful to be able to serve so many different types of families here in Lane County.”

The Bethel District also has two other Food for Lane County pantries specifically for Bethel students and families located within Cascade Middle School and Willamette High School. The Cascade pantry takes place every other week and has fresh produce and non-perishable items. The Willamette High pantry is for emergency needs and typically only has non-perishable items.

Families who would like more information about the school-based pantries should contact the individual schools.
