Bethel Postpones First Day Of School

The Bethel School Board met in an emergency session Friday, September 11, and unanimously voted to delay the first day of school until Monday, September 21 due to the impact of the McKenzie River fires and the other uncontrolled wildfires burning throughout the state. Numerous families and extended families of Bethel students and staff have been significantly affected by the fires and the subsequent evacuations.

The fires are another of the unprecedented set of circumstances we are all experiencing in 2020. But the District is committed to helping as many students and families as possible.

Supplies and Technology Provided: More than 2,800 Chromebooks and hotspots have been distributed to Bethel students, and more technology will continue to be distributed to families in the coming week to assure all students have equal access to online instruction. The District has also collected basic resources for families and school supplies for students’ home study. Families who could use these supplies should contact their school office. All requests will remain confidential.

Meals Program Begins: Grab-and-go student breakfasts and lunches will be available (at no charge) at every Bethel school beginning Tuesday, September 15th.  Bethel students and/or guardians can pick up free warm grab-and-go meals at schools on Tuesdays and Fridays between 11:00am-1:00pm.  Students will also be provided multi-meal boxes to cover Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  The twice-a-week pick-up schedule is intended to decrease the number of days families will have to drive to their school for student meals.

Comprehensive Distance Learning: The District has committed to providing Comprehensive Distance Learning through at least October 23.  That date has not changed. Up until that time, we will continue to monitor local and state COVID-19 metrics to reevaluate and determine when it is safe to bring students  back to school in a Hybrid model:  2 days in school and 3 days online from home.

School Year Calendar: The District will examine how and when additional days can be added to the school year calendar.  The goal is to make up some school days and provide balance to the semester and trimester school schedules. Winter break is still scheduled to be December 21-January 1.

Bethel teachers will continue to connect with students during the coming week in preparation for the first day of school, September 21.
