BINGO Night was so much fun! Thank you to staff, 8th grade students, and all the many parent volunteers who helped make the event a success. And, thank you to each grade level at Prairie Mountain that gathered items for baskets for the raffle to support our 8th grade students.
On Friday, our 7th grade students visited OSU for science activities and a campus tour. Our 4th and 5th grade students heard from Oregon’s Kid Governor, and we were able to celebrate success of our K-5 students at our PRIDE Assembly. It was a busy and fun week. March holds plenty of great opportunities for our students. Here are a few:
March 12–K-5 students engage in a daily Kindness Challenge between now and Spring Break
PTO’s Monster Cookie Dough Fundraiser continues through March 20.
March 13–4th Grade students visit the Hult Center
March 14–3rd Grade Music Assembly during the day and performance at 6:30
March 15–Last day of Trimester 2
March 16–Grading Day—No School
March 19–Winter Band Concert at 7:00 at WHS Powers Auditorium
March 19-23–Spirit Week: Look for information coming home regarding themes for each day.
March 22–6th-8th PRIDE Assembly; West African Cultural Arts Institute Drumming Performance at 6:30 in our Caforium
March 23–Middle School Social during the school day
March 24-April 1–Spring Break
Dear Prairie Mountain Families,
Please talk to your child about the following information. Student involvement is likely to be higher at high school, but there may be some students at the middle and elementary levels who also plan to participate in or recognize this event.
A much-publicized nationwide effort to raise awareness about school safety has called for a student walkout of schools across the country next Wednesday, March 14th, at 10:00 a.m. (Click here for information). The proposed walkout is intended to last for 17 minutes in memory of the 17 victims of the Florida school shooting last month. We want to encourage Prairie Mountain parents and guardians to talk to your children about this day and whether they have been asked by other students to consider leaving school, particularly at the upper grades. We also understand that some parents may be taking their children out of school to participate.
The walkout is a student-led effort and, as with other events of this nature, is not organized, supported, or encouraged by the school. If it takes place, we want to ensure it is conducted in a peaceful, respectful, and safe manner.
The issue of school safety is one with which we are all concerned. We respect our students’ right to express their personal views and their interest in being informed and engaged community members. However, our school and district cannot encourage walkouts or other demonstrations that affect the learning environment. During school hours, students should be in school—safe, supervised, and learning.
Your child’s safety and education are our primary focus. The safest place for students during school hours is in the school building. Should a walkout occur, we will have staff on hand to keep an eye on safety, but staff cannot join the demonstration as participants.
Students’ absence from class for the walkout will be considered unexcused or students may be marked tardy for class time they miss. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
