In the Spotlight

It is National Teacher Appreciation Week!

Take some time to thank a teacher for their countless hours and selfless attention that they give to their student each and every day. When I send an email to a teacher and they respond at 8:00 in the evening, when I swing by the school on a Saturday and see teachers’ cars parked outside their classroom, when I walk through the lunchroom and I see a teacher having lunch with their students, I realize that we are fortunate. Our community can truly say that we have the most dedicated teachers around. State test scores showcase where students are academically on the day they take the test. The baseline where students started from and the smile on their face when a teacher guides them to understanding is another “test score”. The answer you get when you ask a child, “what was the best part of your day?” and the excitement you see on a teachers face when they share a success story, are other “test scores”. Educators make more of a difference in the lives of children then we will ever know. This is why teachers are in the spotlight this week. At Malabon we celebrate our teachers on National Teacher Appreciation Day, Tuesday May 3rd… and every day! Chair Massages, a BBQ and plenty of chocolate are some small ways we are thanking our teachers this week for all they do for our kids!

Thank You Malabon Classified Staff!

We talk a lot about what a school needs to run smoothly each day. Of course we need dynamic teachers to educate our kids. However there are many, “behind the scenes” jobs that allow teachers to do just that. Those jobs include the people who feed our kids, who check their temperature when they aren’t feeling well, who keep our school clean and safe each day, who assist kids on the playground at recess, who help us check out books in the library, who support student academics with small group lessons…and the list goes on. Our classified staff is second to none here at Malabon. This week was classified employees week. We appreciate our classified staff every day…but this week was an opportunity to celebrate and thank these fine people for the work they do, above and beyond their assigned duties. They do the work they do because they care about kids. Today and every day, we care about you Malabon Classified Staff!! Thank you!

Mrs. Maul in the Spotlight, Bond News and February’s Newsletter

Thank You Mrs. Maul!

It is National School Counselor Week and we have the best school counselor in the Nation, let alone the whole wide world, right here at Malabon!

Mrs. Maul Teaching a Reading Group to Help Individualize Instruction!

Sonja Maul has been Malabon’s school counselor for over ten years. In this time she has built relationships with students, educators and families. She knows the systems we have in place because she has been instrumental in implementing them. She knows why we make decisions we do because she has been around to see the outcomes of decisions made in the past. Sonja stands in the background making big problems smaller, supporting students and their obstacles that get in the way of their performance and guiding parents with the objective of raising respectful and responsible children. Sonja knows that the number one focus of our school is to keep teachers teaching and keep kids learning at all times. She supports all staff members so that they are able to do their best work. She supports all students so that they are able to do their best work. She supports all parents so that they are able to do their best work. And the magic happens when she is able to make us all feel supported at the same time.

Mrs. Maul is irreplaceable and unique to her profession.  Please take time this week to let her know how much we appreciate her work here at Malabon, during school counselor week…and all the other weeks in between!

Bond Decision

A decision on the proposed Bethel bond measure to make necessary repairs and upgrades to our schools is on hold for at least a few more days.
The small bond would fix roofs, increase student safety, improve heating efficiency, update textbooks and classroom technology, and more in our schools. The bond would accomplish all that without increasing the current tax rate.

But the School Board is waiting to learn if the proposed Eugene City Income Tax for Schools will be on the May ballot. If the City Council puts the income tax measure on the ballot, then the Bethel bond will wait.

Check out superintendent Colt Gill’s blog for the latest update.

Mrs. Ericson, Mrs. Cameron, Mrs. Admire, Mrs. George, Mrs. Stock, Mrs. Thurner and Mrs. Haggerty

Reading is So Exciting!
That is what our RISE room at Malabon attempts to instill in each student who walks through our doors. Celene Admire is Malabon’s Title 1 teacher. She works tirelessly each and every day to individualize instruction for all kids at Malabon.

We became a school wide title school this year, allowing Celene and her incredible group of fine assistants the opportunity to help all children needing a reading boost.

You can visit Celene’s blog by clicking here. Information about reading support and upcoming parent workshops are just a few things you can find.

Malabon students continue to make great gains  in the area of Reading, with a big thanks to our RISE Room staff. This is why Celene Admire along with Mrs. Ericson, Mrs. Cameron, Mrs. George, Mrs. Stock (substutute  for Mrs. Mason) , Mrs. Thurner and Mrs. Haggerty are IN THE SPOTLIGHT!!

The Bethel wall calendar contains errors regarding the last week of the school year in June. The final day for students is June 15th. The staff “checkout” day is Thursday, June 16th. The Budget Reduction Day is Friday, June 17th.  All the school’s online calendars are correct.
