Seattle Teaching for Social Justice Conference

On October 20-21, seven students and two teachers from Kalapuya High School travelled to Seattle for the Northwest Conference on Teaching for Social Justice. The conference is held annually in the northwest and brings together educators and students to look at how issues of social justice are approached in classrooms, schools, and school districts.  The conference opened with a keynote address by Brian Jones, an educator and activist from New York City.  His speech highlighted the need for all of us to stand up and be counted when it comes to social justice in our schools and communities and we left feeling energized and committed to “being the change we want to see”. The rest of the conference was spent attending various interactive presentations.  Our students participated in workshops on human sex trafficking in northwest cities, immigration issues surrounding DACA, identifying and changing stereotypes, writing for change, and recognizing and understanding the effect white privilege has on our schools, communities, and our nation.  Students and teachers left Seattle excited to share what was learned with the Kalapuya students and staff.

As part of the experience, time was spent sightseeing in downtown Seattle.  We walked the famous “gum wad” alley, watched fish throwing at Pike Place Market, and browsed through the market sampling fresh pressed apple cider, hot chili pepper jelly, and baked delicacies.  We got to see a great view of Seattle at night riding on the Pier 54 Ferris Wheel and ate Vietnamese cuisine at a local restaurant.  Most enjoyable was the time we spent getting to know each other outside of a school setting.
