Counselor’s Corner

September 2019

Welcome Back!

My name is Elizabeth Johnson and I am the school counselor at Irving on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays.  This is my fourteenth year as a school counselor and my fourth year at Irving.  Additionally, we have very exciting news that we have another school counselor, Will Davidson, who is at Irving Monday afternoons and Wednesday mornings.  This is Will’s first year and he is also the school counselor at Danebo.  We’re thrilled to have him join our team!

During September, I am visiting all K-5 classes at Irving and introducing myself to the students, Will is also making himself available to meet and get to know as many students as possible.  It has been a blast to meet each of them and share a bit about ourselves and the role of the school counselor.  In the coming months, as part of our comprehensive guidance curriculum, we will be teaching lessons in all classes reinforcing the Irving Pillars, as well as addressing academic, personal/social and career development.

Additionally, we will run a variety of small counseling groups throughout the year.  We work on developing skills including: building friendships, impulse control, anger management, academic solutions and addressing changing families (including divorce, grief, or other changes in living situations).  If you are interested in having your child participate, please feel free to contact one of us or your child’s classroom teacher.

Please stop by our shared office (located behind the main office) and we look forward to meeting or reconnecting with you! J

Information About State Tests

Each spring, Oregon students in grades 3-8 and 11 participate in state assessments in English Language Arts and Math. Additionally, students in grades 5, 8 and 11 participate in science testing. Bethel has always had a high participation rate on state assessments as both parents and staff have found value in this “point-in-time” check on the progress of our students and our educational system. However, parents in Oregon have the option to opt their children out of the state assessments. Click here for more information. (PDF) (PDF)

School Starts Tuesday September 3rd!

Irving Families,

We are so excited to welcome students to Irving on the first day of school on Tuesday, September 3rd!  Below is some information you may find helpful:

Supervision at Irving starts at 8:00am.  There are two general areas we would like students to go.  Most students go to the Cafeteria in the morning.  Breakfast is free for all students.  Students will be dismissed from cafeteria at 8:20 to go to classrooms.  The other area students can go is the north gym.  Gym doors will open at 8:00am.  Students will be dismissed from the gym at 8:20 to go to classrooms.  Students should not be on the playground before school as there is not supervision on the playground before school starts.

If you are dropping off your student in the morning or picking up in the afternoon we are asking you to use the main parking lot.  If you need to get out of your car we are asking parents to use a parking spot.  Please do not leave your unattended vehicle in a driving lane.  Parked cars need to be able to back out.

The small south parking lot will not be used for student drop off or pick up during school hours 7:30am-4:00pm. The small south parking lot will be for Irving and Afterschool Club Staff only. To ensure the safety of students, all drop off and pick up of students will occur in the main parking lot where there is supervision.

In order to ensure student safety, traffic flow in the parking lot is one way.  Please do not exit the parking lot at the north entrance.

Kindergarten and First grade teachers walk their students to the front of the school for dismissal. All other students will walk to the front of the school for dismissal. Some students have bikes in the back nearest the playground. 2nd-5th students may exit gates to get their bikes and go home.

Thank you for following Irving Parking Lot Expectations

Barger Reconstruction Warning

Anyone who has driven on Barger Drive recently is aware of the significant road construction and delays while driving through that area. The work will continue through the first few weeks of school.

  • Anticipate long delays; leave early; pack plenty of patience; stay safe
  • Please encourage your child to walk or bike to school. The sidewalks should be completely refurbished and open by the first day of school.
  • Choose alternative routes, especially for those heading to Willamette High School. The construction at Barger and Echo Hollow is big and you should expect traffic and delays to be substantial.

Here is the good news. The finished roadway will include:

  • Upgraded sidewalk access ramps
  • Traffic signal improvements
  • New median islands with trees and landscaping
  • The addition of stormwater treatment facilities
  • Lane reconfigurations near the Cubit/Echo Hollow intersection, which is annually among the most accident-prone in the city.
  • A Barger bike lane near Cubit that is separated and protected from traffic

The free food will be available every Tuesday from noon-4:00 p.m., beginning September 10th.

To reach the Bethel Farm, turn from Royal Avenue onto Patriot Way and drive behind Prairie Mountain School. Be sure to park in the Farm’s gravel parking area.

News For Incoming Kindergarten Students

Irving Kindergarten Families,

Now in its 5th year, the Kindergarten Smart Start program is a carefully designed process intended to ensure a successful transition into kindergarten for your child.

During the first week of school, your child will attend school one day. During the second week of school, from Monday through Thursday, your child will attend school on a staggered start, a half-day either in the morning or afternoon. This will enable kindergarten staff to:

  • Introduce your child to school in small groups with a supportive team of educators
  • Teach expectations and routines as they learn about recess on the playground
  • Teach cafeteria procedures as they eat lunch
  • Assess students in academic areas and school readiness activities in small groups
  • Meet with families to learn more about your child
  • Determine classroom assignments to best meet the educational needs of every child

Smart Start also allows time for you to meet with your child’s kindergarten teacher before the school year begins. At this meeting, you can help the teacher get to know your child and ask any questions you may have about the upcoming school year.

During registration, you will sign up for a time to meet with your child’s classroom teacher on Thursday, September 5th or Friday, September 6th and indicate a preference for either the morning or afternoon for staggered start the second week of school (September 9-13).  Your school will notify you of the exact time of your parent/teacher meeting and confirm your staggered start time.

Smart Start Schedule 2019-20
