Middle Level

Who: All 6-8 Teachers
Dr. Kamil will share current research regarding vocabulary, comprehension and discussion. The instructional recommendations from the Writing to Read report and the impact on student performance will also be presented. Dr. Kamil will also discuss the good work completed by our 6-12 ELA alignment team.
Teachers will regroup in content area teams to discuss the implications of the Common Core State Standards and acknowledge how much we have in place already towards this goal.
Elementary
When: Friday, March 9
Time: 12:30-3:30
Location: Willamette High School Powers Auditorium transitioning to Cascade
Who: All Elementary Teachers
After an introduction, Dr. Michael Kamil will provide an overview of the Common Core State Standards for grades K-5. Teachers will then reconvene at Cascade Middle School in grade level teams to complete activities related to the Common Core State Standards. These facilitated conversations will allow us to discuss the implications of the Common Core State Standards and acknowledge how much we have in place already towards this goal.
Michael L. Kamil is the Professor of Education at Stanford University. He chairs both the Pacific Resources for Education and Learning’s reading advisory panel and the research panel of the New York State English Language Arts Standards Revision. Dr. Kamil was a member of the National Reading Panel, where he chaired the subgroups on comprehension, technology, and teacher education; the RAND Reading Study Group; the National Literacy Panel; and the Carnegie Corporation Advisory Council on Advancing Adolescent Literacy. In addition, Dr. Kamil was chair of the committee which authored the IES Practice Guide, Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices.

If you are a current EEA member, you may apply for up to 8 credit hours of tuition reduction through the EEA Credit Bank. Read the EEA Guidelines and then complete the the Credit Bank Application Form. Send the form to Holly Hernandez, Bethel EEA Representative, at Cascade Middle School. All Bethel students, ages 13 – 18 are invited to submit a single work of art created within one year prior to the deadline date of April 16, 2012, for this gallery show. If your piece is accepted for the show, you will be notified with further details. Students should read the Guidelines and complete an online EntryForm.
2012 Lane County Spelling Contest
Here is all y
ou need for your students to take part in the 2012 Lane County Spelling Contest. Contact Tereasa Hanley to sign up and let her know who in your building will coordinate the contest.
Here are the words for each of the three divisions:
Division 1 Word List: grades 1-5
Division 2 Word List: grades 6-8
Division 3 Word List: grades 9-12
Each school must first determine their top speller in each division by April 27, 2012. Scores will be sent to Tereasa Hanley and compared with other schools in Bethel. The District Champion in each division will go on to the County level to compete at Lane ESD on Wednesday, May 23rd.
The first place winner for each division (elementary, middle and high) from the County competition will advance to the Oregon Statwide Championship. This competition will be held September 1, 2012 during the Oregon State Fair.
Math Leadership Team Meets February 9
Bethel’s Math Leadership Team (MLT) will meet on Thursday, February 9th from 8:00 to 11:30 at the Lane ESD. Teachers and administrators will learn more about the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the Smarter Balanced Assessment. The MLT’s goal by the end of this school year, is to develop a plan to successfully start transitioning to the CCSS in the fall.
