Fairfield Distance Learning Update

Hi Fairfield Families,

I hope your week has gone well.  Our staff has been increasing their connection with students through Zoom classroom meetings and phone calls.  They have shared with me the excitement kids have around the new type of learning that’s planned.

Consistent and clear communication with you is critical in supporting continued learning for our students.  So, each Friday I will provide information for the week to come.  In addition, the district is hosting K-5 parent information sessions about Zoom and Google Classroom, two important online platforms used in Distance Learning (details below). Meanwhile, don’t hesitate to contact your teacher or me if you have any questions.

Tips for Parents – Learning At Home

–Approach learning from home with patience and kindness
–Establish a comfortable routine and location where your child can focus on learning
–Set up a schedule and learning pace that works best for your child
–Consider yourself a learning partner and facilitator, rather than a classroom teacher
–Reach out to us through email or phone; we are all learning this process together

Learning Schedule for the Week

–5-day Teacher-Created Activities are structured, grade level learning, complimented by Zoom Classroom sessions, Dojo communication, or phone calls. Your child’s Teacher-Created activities will be available on the Bethel website Monday, and I will also email the link to you.

10-day Supplementary Activities may be connected to teacher-created materials and are led by the student or family.

Every day of the week, do your best to work on one day of work in the Teacher-Created Activities. When you are finished, there is the option of working on a day of activities from the Supplemental Activities (online only). Twice a week, your teacher will hold Zoom Classroom Sessions or connect with you by phone.

Distance Learning and Home

Families! First of all, I wanted to say ‘Hello’. I miss our connections and communications. I want you to know that Distance Learning is a challenge for all of us. Teachers are learning how to teach differently as we do our best to follow guidance from the State. I want you to know, the most important thing to us is that we take care of all of our kids, and all of our families. While that looks a little different for everyone, this is what I want you to know:

  1. We are all in this together.
  2. We will all make mistakes and we will grow.
  3. We don’t expect kids to sit and work all day. Sit down with your child and schedule out 2 hours a day of school. Help them make their routine or ask them to make it.  You can make the routine work for your family. You do NOT have to be part of the routine. The work being planned is meant to be as independent as possible.
  4. Attend ZOOM meetings! You can either get your child going and leave or you can stay. It’s such a great experience.
  5. No student will get left behind! If the computer is not working, email me and I will get you a hard copy of the work to be done. We will all work together to do the best we can in the next 8 weeks. Remember, this is new for everyone.
  6. Reach out with questions. Contact your teacher, contact me – jenny.sink@bethel.k12.or.us
  7. NUMBER 1 – W are all in this together.

We really miss you. We understand that this time is challenging. Fairfield Staff are here! We are here for our kids and we are here for you. I’ll be updating this often so please stay tuned and keep in touch!

Familias!

Family Guidance For Distance Learning

Hi Fairfield Families,

We are thinking about all of you!

We know that many of you are anxious as Bethel prepares to slowly roll out our Distance Learning opportunities for your children. This is new for all of us! We will learn from each other as we go, working side by side to provide learning for all of our children. Your feedback is very important as we do this work, so please continue communicating with us.

What is Distance Learning? Distance learning means that your children and Bethel teachers are not together in the school or classroom.  How we do Distance Learning can look many different ways including paper packets sent home, phone calls with your teacher, a ZOOM meeting with teachers, a Dojo communication with your teacher, or an electronic classroom that we call Google Classroom.

Beginning this coming Friday, April 17th, I will share via my blog a 5-day plan for the following week. This week you and your child can continue with the materials sent home or posted on Bethel’s Supplemental Resources page.

Core Values for our Distance Learning for All:

— The safety and wellness of all students.

— The cultivation of connections and relationships throughout our community.

— Students and equity are at the center of all decisions.

You and your child should participate in Distance Learning in a way that meets your family’s needs. Here are some ideas Continue reading

Schools Closed Rest Of School Year

Bethel families,

Today we learned our students will not return to school campuses this school year, while plans around graduation requirements for seniors have also been announced.

An executive order from Gov. Kate Brown extended the closure of school buildings through June 12th in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep our community safe and healthy. While campuses are closed, education continues. Bethel schools will continue on the same pathway of Distance Learning for All that our staff has been preparing to deliver to all students.

This year has also significantly changed for our seniors. Colt Gill, Director of the Oregon Department of Education, has announced a plan around graduation requirements. Click here for the full ODE plan. We are still digging into the new guidance, and will be reaching out to each of our high school seniors and their families soon with more information. Look for communication soon from Willamette and Kalapuya principals.

The school closure also means that proms, field trips, graduations, award ceremonies, and simple classroom activities will be missed or experienced differently. We plan to include our high school student leaders in collaborative planning efforts to address these experiences, and will share details as plans are developed.

During these unprecedented times, I want to say thank you for the kindness and patience you show to one another. We will need continued patience, resilience, kindness and strength as we move through these next few months.

Please remember that we care deeply about the well-being of each and every Bethel student. There is no road map for the trip we are on, but we will take this ride together.

Chris Parra
Bethel Superintendent

Continue reading

Distance Work Is Here!

Fairfield Families!

Bethel teachers and administrators have worked hard (without being able to meet in person) to create meaningful supplemental learning materials for all Bethel students.

The supplemental material is now being mailed to the homes of all elementary and middle grade students, providing 5 days of instruction. This week, teachers will pivot to planning distance learning as directed by the Oregon Department of Education. More details on Distance Learning will be coming later this week.

Meanwhile, teachers will also be calling families again, confirming who is in need of the limited number of district-provided Chromebooks.

We hope you are all well and are able to access Bethel’s Supplemental Resources page.

Hola Familias De Fairfield!
