Danebo Read-a-thon

Last week, your child brought home a reading log and information related to our 2nd Annual Danebo Read-a-thon.

Following our Family Fun Reading Night (and celebrating Dr. Seuss Week), we are continuing to encourage students to read at home and ask friends and family members to sponsor them for the number of minutes they read.

All students who participate in the Read-a-thon will receive a book mark and the student in each grade level who reads the most minutes (and brings in at least one pledge) will earn a trip to Barnes &  Noble to pick out a book to keep.

Funds raised from the Read-a-thon will be used to purchase new books and comfortable seating for the library.

Reading logs and pledge sheets are due Wednesday, 3/21/18. Thanks for supporting reading and the Danebo library!

Danebo PTO Fundraiser Needs Your Help!

Our PTO has been given a great opportunity, thanks to Papa Murphy’s! Students are pre-selling fundraiser cards that contain coupons for savings at Papa Murphy’s and can be used at Papa Murphy’s throughout Oregon.

The cards sell for $5.00 and Danebo PTO will keep $4 of the sale price! Funds from the sale will be used to continue providing supports to classrooms in the form of field trips, popcorn days and school-wide assemblies.

Order forms with money are due to your child’s teacher by Tuesday, 3/20/18, and cards will be sent home with students to deliver to those who purchased on Wednesday, 3/21/18.

Thank you for supporting Danebo PTO!

Danebo Students Helping CMN Babies

Danebo students are collecting coins for a Children’s Miracle Network coin drive, supporting the Wolverine contestants from Willamette High School.

Each classroom has a CMN bucket (and there is one in the office, too) for students to donate coins that will be given to the Wolverine Contestants for their Wolverine Pageant on March 17th.

Thanks for helping Danebo students help the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) and Wolverine contestants reach their fundraising goals.

PTO Family BINGO Night Postponed

If you happened to see the Danebo Google Calendar on the Bethel website, you might have seen a PTO Family BINGO night scheduled for this Thursday, March 15th. We will need to postpone that and hope to have one planned for April.

If you’d like to help with the planning of a BINGO night (or other PTO events), please join us for our next PTO meeting on Tuesday, March 20th, 2018 at 6:30 pm in the library. Childcare is provided.

Active Bethel Citizens Returns!

Active Bethel Citizens is being resurrected. Bethel’s official neighborhood association, Active Bethel Citizens had fallen by the wayside in the last year or so, meaning the Bethel area has forfeited City funds, support and other resources that could benefit our community.

Now some concerned neighbors are giving the association new life. They will be having several meetings in the next few months, and hope to elect a Board of Directors and Steering Committee by May. If you are interested in having your voice heard, please get involved.

The next two Active Bethel Citizens Steering Committee Meetings will be held at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 4445 Royal Avenue. Everyone is welcome! Meetings will take place Saturday, March 10th at 2 pm and Monday March 19th at 6 pm.

Dear Danebo families,

Please talk to your child about this. It is most likely to take place at the high school level, but there may be some students at the middle and elementary levels who also plan to participate in or recognize this event.

A much-publicized nationwide effort to raise awareness about school safety has called for a student walkout of schools across the country next Wednesday, March 14th, at 10:00 a.m. (Click here for information).  The proposed walkout is intended to last for 17 minutes in memory of the 17 victims of the Florida school shooting last month. We want to encourage Danebo parents and guardians to talk to your children about this day, and if they have been asked by other students to consider leaving school, particularly at the upper grades. We also understand that some parents may be taking their children out of school to participate.

The walkout is a student-led effort and is not organized, supported, or encouraged by the school. If it takes place, we want to ensure it is conducted in a peaceful, respectful, and safe manner.

The issue of school safety is one with which we are all concerned. We respect our students’ right to express their personal views and their interest in being informed and engaged community members. However, our school and district cannot encourage walkouts or other demonstrations that affect the learning environment. During school hours, students should be in school—safe, supervised, and learning.

Your child’s safety and education are our primary focus. The safest place for students during school hours is in the school building. Should a walkout occur, we will have staff on hand to help keep students safe, but staff cannot join the demonstration as participants.

Any students who leave school to participate in a walkout demonstration will receive an Unexcused Absence, or will be marked Tardy for the class time they miss.

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
