Bethel Restores Two Days To School Year

There’s good news as the school year approaches; Bethel is restoring two days to the end of the school calendar that had been designated as Budget Reduction Days.

The District was able to restore those days next June thanks to slight underspending at the end of the last school year, and slight increases in expected revenue.

This leaves 3 Budget Reduction Days on the calendar, necessary in order to balance the budget:\

  • October 13 (a Teacher Inservice Day when students wouldn’t attend anyway)
  •  November 22 (day before Thanksgiving holiday)
  • June 18

A revised school year calendar will be voted on by the School Board on August 28.

Budget Committee Approves 2017-18 Budget

Members of the Bethel Budget Committee, including State Senator James Manning, study the district proposal before approving the plan in a unanimous vote.

After expressing concern about the lack of funding and going over the spending proposals for every department, the Bethel Budget Committee has approved the budget plan for the coming school year.

The School Board is scheduled to adopt the plan at its June 26th meeting.

The district faces a $2.3 million budget gap but intends to avoid increasing class sizes by instead using budget reduction days.

The budget tentatively calls for 10 budget reduction days. The Bethel Calendar Committee will meet next week to determine which days to cut, and develop a plan to restore those days should funding become available.

You are encouraged to email your legislators (Rep. Julie Fahey and Sen. James Manning…he’s on our budget committee!) and let them know your thoughts. They want to hear from you, and it’s likely you have something to say.

Join The Bethel Budget Committee

The Bethel School Board is seeking community members interested in serving on the District’s Budget Committee.  There are three openings and all are for 3-year terms.

The Budget Committee provides budget advice and direction, examines the District’s entire budget, and recommends a budget to the School Board.  The School Board will select applicants to fill positions. Applicants must be a registered voter and must live within the boundaries of the Bethel School District.

Notice of Budget Committee Meeting

A public meeting of the Bethel School District Budget Committee will take place Monday, May 9th at 7:00 p.m., at the Bethel Administration Building.

The purpose of the meeting is to receive the budget message and to take comment from the public on the budget for the 2016-17 school year. This is a public meeting where deliberation of the Budget Committee will take place, and any person may appear at the meeting and discuss proposed programs with the Committee.

A copy of the budget document may be inspected or obtained on or after May 9th at the Bethel School District Administration Office.
