The Gift Of Literacy In Bethel

Malabon students give it some serious thought before choosing their free book.

The goal is to give away 2,400 books this spring.

Volunteer extraordinaire Chris Ferguson is well on his way to meeting that goal, having already visited a number of Bethel elementary schools.

Ferguson’s annual spring fling gives students the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of new books that he’s purchased or has been given by generous donors.

Children first take a walk-though tour of his book displays, then circle around for the selection process to choose the book that speaks to them.

Ferguson, a retired Bethel teacher, is passionate about volunteering. He has created school stores that students run, clothes closets that provide resources at Willamette High School, the Free Farmers Food Market that he has operated every single week for five years, holiday giving programs, and the springtime free book giveaway.
